Course Description
This French immersion course designed so students with varying levels of French proficiency will improve their level of comprehension and speaking in addition to gaining an exposure and appreciation of the culture of the French West Indies, particularly Guadeloupe. In addition to formal language instruction, students will experience different aspects of the French West Indies through history lessons, various cultural workshops, an oral history project, a week living with a local family in the town of Sainte Anne and participating in community service work with local youth. |
Course Objectives/Outcomes
By completion of the course, each student will:
- Gain an increased understanding of French grammar and vocabulary
- Have a better grasp of conversational French language
- Complete an Oral History project, interviewing at least three locals on a topic of the students choosing. The Oral History project will be presented to student peers while on program and will be submitted in writing.

Language Levels

Level A1 – Elementary French 1:
- Students will be able to use basic grammatical structures, common regular verbs and the present and near future tenses.
- Students will be prepared to express themselves simply, participate in basic social interactions and accomplish daily tasks in French, such as introducing and speaking about themselves, asking for things and making plans.
Level A2 – Elementary French 2:
- Students will be able to use basic grammatical structures, regular verbs, prepositions and the present, near future and polite conditional tenses.
- Students will be prepared to simply express themselves, participate in basic social interactions and accomplish daily tasks in French, such as speaking about themselves and others with some detail, asking for and giving directions, and making plans.
Level B1 – Intermediate French 1:
- Students will be able to use more advanced French grammar including common irregular and direct and indirect verbs, expressions of quantity and time, and masculine and feminine pronouns.
- Students will be able to express themselves in more detail, participate in more in-depth social interactions and easily accomplish daily tasks in French, such as interviewing someone or participating in an argument or discussion.
Level B2 – Intermediate French 2:
- Students will be able to use more advanced French grammar including the basics of simple and anterior future, present and past conditional, and present and past subjunctive tenses.
- Students will be able to express themselves in detail, participate in in-depth social interactions, easily accomplish daily tasks and understand more figurative ways of speaking.
Level C1 – Advanced French 1:
- Students will be able to use advanced French grammar including the subjunctive and conditional tenses and will understand the nuances of the French language.
- Students will gain a command of the cultural aspects of communication and will be able to express themselves clearly in most situations.
Level C2 – Advanced French 2:
- Students will be able to use advanced French grammar including the subjunctive, conditional and simple past tenses and will understand nuances and forms of literary expression in the language.
- Students will gain a command of the cultural aspects of communication and will be able to express themselves clearly in nearly any situation.

Field Studies and exercises
- French West Indian culture including traditional dance, music and cooking
- Basic Caribbean history; specifically, how Guadeloupe’s unique culture and race relations developed out of this history
- History of French Creole
- Basic Caribbean island ecology
