Course Description
On this three week course, students will study Chinese language and culture. Students will participate in lectures, discussions with locals, field activities including cultural site visits, as well as ongoing service work at a Tibetan Orphanage. Students will learn ethnographic research techniques. Students will visit and study the cities of Shangri-La and Beijing and also take short looks at several other locations each with differing challenges.

Course Objectives/Outcomes
By completion of the course, each student will be able:
- Gain an increased understanding of Chinese grammar and vocabulary
- Have a better grasp of conversational Chinese language
- Understand how Chinese politics and current economy affects the world as well as the country itself.
- Have a basic understanding of development issues in China, relating to environmental issues, historic challenges, and sustainability.
- Complete an Oral History project, interviewing at least three local Chinese on a topic of the students choosing. The Oral History project will be presented to student peers while on program and will be submitted in writing.
